Mindfulness is, according to Jon Kabat-Zinn who is a pioneer in the mindfulness movement, "awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally.” He states there are two aspects to the mindfulness practice. Firstly, it is a formal meditative practice that requires commitment and energy to drop down into the present moment and breathe. Secondly, it is pure awareness and living life in every moment that we have. The meditative practice is only a tool to help us learn to be more aware, non-judgemental, and compassionate in our everyday lives. Mindfulness is NOT a particular state of 'being' that clears your mind and makes life's problems disappear.
There have been many scientific studies that show the benefits of mindfulness. It has shown that practicing mindfulness can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and rumination. Research shows that it positively impacts parts of the brain that control emotional regulation, sleep, and attention, while lowering blood pressure and supporting the immune system. In addition to health, research has been made on the benefits of mindfulness in business. In companies, results showed improved communication and work performance.
